BEHIND THE HYPE: AVON PERFECTLY MATTE LIPSTICKS (Better Than Mac?)
Ah, matte lipsticks, I almost forgot how much I love them.
I will admit I recently came off a phase where I exclusively used lip balms and liquid lipsticks non stop, to rediscover my love for a classic lipstick that was less drying and just as good to wear day to day. My love for the matte finish has been a long one really and with time I have tried and tested quite a few different brands.
I will admit most of those happen to be mid to high range and despite my intense efforts I never really found an affordable matte that wasn't frosty, flakey or extra drying. This changed after I saw a few YouTubers on my tv, on a laid-back ad opening up a "mystery" box and trying these amazingly non-branded pigmented lipsticks.
In the commercial they finish off opening up the letter that reveals to them what the brand was Avon. I honestly thought it was clever marketing as the YouTube style video seemed to be working even on me, and I wanted to get my hands on those lip products, ASAP. I waited to see some reviews and now finally I got my hands on a few that I wanted to share with y'all.
I picked up four shades - two nudes and two brighter numbers, just to mix it up a little from my standard all-neutral hauls.
- Perfectly Nude (literally the IT nude)
- Au Naturale (My favourite, a brick-beige nude)
- Peach Flatters (A bright warm-toned peach with red undertones)
- Red Supreme (The classic red)
The first thing I thought when I applied the lipsticks was "whoah they're not drying...at all". I think I have forgotten what it feels like to have a standard matte finish on your lips and not something that sucks the soul and moisture out of your body. Okay maybe that's a little dramatic, but you know what I mean.
The consistency on application is almost mousse like but pigmented. All of my shades applied nicely but I found it most flattering on me to use colours like Au Naturale or Red Supreme, as the very nude option required more work to be pulled off - a lip liner. It still looked phenomenal though.
The wear time was excellent but as I like my more complex and messy meals to eat (ahem noodles), I did need to re-apply a little bit of the product after lunch or dinner. Layering looked great though and no bleeding happened when I didn't use any lip liner.
With 15 shades available you have a nice selection to choose from and there's definitely something for everyone. I will be adding more to my collection soon as they're extremely affordable (they cost £5.50) and they come in the sleekest packaging.
Are they better than MAC?
Well, they do feel more matte and the fact that they're not as expensive is definitely a bonus. I have a long history with Mac though, and I love the brand's other finishes so I will say that these are amazing dupes. I hope they'll make more colours.
I'd love to know what you think of the Avon Perfectly Matte lipsticks if you tried them!
