I love makeup, I really do, but sometimes I feel like I'm stuck in a little rut, using the same products over and over because I'm in a hurry and I have no time to sit there and choose something different. This is totally my fault but I'm pretty positive that we all fall into this hole at some point. To store my overflowing collection of beauty products I currently use the famous Alex drawers from Ikea (so original, I know) and a couple of acrylic containers from HerClutterBox* so you can say that my collection is pretty big, or above average. Whilst part of me knows that I live in makeup heaven, why did I get so bored of it..?
A few weeks ago I had a minor epiphany and decided it was time to sort my stash out and get excited about makeup again. I thought it' be nice to share my little experience of getting out of my yawn-worthy routine and tell you how I started giving love to products I hadn't touched in months.
- GO ALL OUT
This is the little process where you get all your things on the bed/ box/table/ wherever you feel is best to fully observe your collection. Remember products that you may have in your bags or pockets, it's essential as you want to put them on a break from your daily use and pick something else after.
Whilst I'm on this stage I put some music on, set the tone and pretend I'm in a shopping isle at Boots.
- SPLIT IT IN PILES
Just like you may do with clothes when spring cleaning, you should form a 'yes' pile where you put all the products you love, a 'maybe' pile with things you are unsure of and a 'donate/sell/toss' pile which should consist of things that you never use or stuff that is totally out of date. If it smells funny or the consistency changed you better wave goodbye to it.
Probably the most important step of them all. Get rid of things you don't use or don't like. The feeling of owning fewer but loved pieces rather than 100 things you don't particularly adore is game-changing. You'll have more space to stock new things (hello, an extra excuse to shop) or if you're gong minimal just less clutter to stare at.
- RE-ORGANISE IT
Changing things up can really help you as it refreshes your outlook and your perspective. If you can, swap where you kept your lipstick with something else and vice versa. I realised that I'm more willing to use certain products if I SEE them which is why I love using MyClutterbox because I have everything organised in compartments but it's all visible. Certain lipsticks used to be stuck at the bottom of my drawer, hidden from everything and everyone. What's the point? The use of my acrylic storage was a game changer in terms of lip products because I could clearly see everything I own and since the packaging is pretty and most of the time shows colours, it was just pleasing to the eye.
- SWAP IT REGULARLY
Every week if I can I re-organise a certain compartment just to freshen up my memory. Even small changes like placing the lip liners in the top drawer and the lip balms at the bottom makes me go "ooh I haven't used this in a while" which clearly shows how much it helps.
- WHERE'S THE LOVE?
Create a little space where you put products that need more love. It can be a dish, a container or just a tiny organised pile on your dressing table to force you to use these things. A friend of mine has a heart-shaped plate where she puts blushes or bronzers that need to be used more. Again swap it up weekly or whenever you feel like it, but challenge yourself to use this product daily if you can. I have many palettes so I place a palette on my beauty area every week and make the time to use it in the morning or in the evening if I'm going out.
I'd love to know how you store your makeup and any tips you may have on keeping things interesting! Thanks for reading.
