How I Beat the January Blues

The holidays have come and gone and it's a little weird. I haven't felt super festive this season. I could probably blame it on the fact that I was still working in retail so most of the time I was in a shop serving moody customers instead of catching up with family however taking the tree down and realising there's not endless supplies of chocolate in the kitchen kind of breaks my heart.

January has in general always been an odd month for me as it's officially the beginning of a new chapter for most people, and with that lots of pressure to better myself and improve as I see many others doing the same. For the last three years not much has happened, but 2017 kicked off with pretty big stuff for me - I started a new job this week ( a 3 months placement in social media and PR) and I also went back to the gym, which combined make some pretty massive changes I think. I mean the main reason this post is going live late is that my first session at the gym was so intense (thanks trainer) that my arms were too shakey and weak to even type a post. Not even joking.

To complete my little transition into the new year I also like to get inspired and most of all get the energy back as I've been feeling quite drained despite only getting out of a 'holiday'. I wanted to share with you guys how I beat the dreaded January blues and what I've been doing to start my year in the best way possible in order to keep my mood up and stay excited about what's to come.

- Reading
I'll be honest, I have not read many books for pleasure in the last three years as I've been buried in my uni assignment which required six to 12 books per semester. As I'm done with education now, I can finally start enjoying a nice cup of tea with a book I personally choose without an impeding exam on it or any bloody theory to analyze. Currently I've been reading Library Of The Dead before bed-time and so far I'm loving it!

- Getting Fashion Inspo
New year, new style?
Maybe not for me as nothig beats all black, but a book that really inspired me is Self.Styled by Anthony Lycett. I'm currently sharing it with all my friends who did fashion degrees like me, as it's eye-opening to see so many different people around the world celebrating their own individuality and style. It explores themes such as colour, taste and gender but if you can't be bothered to read it (you should..) it's still an amazing coffee table addition as it's rich with gorgeous images. I would say it's like Pinterest but in printed form and with a lot more original content.

-  Taking care of myself
I have been taking vitamin tablets that help me physically and mentally and also trying to go to bed earlier. For the last few months I have been feeling extra tired and extra sleepy (you'd catch me yawning all the time and just constantly feeling like a battery at 5%) so I was suggested something natural: the Ginseng and Ginko Bilboa tablets and the Natural Energy Release pills by Red Kooga. As I've always taken extra vitamins in the morning, ever since I was kid, it hasn't been an issue incorporating them into my routine at all. It takes a couple of weeks to notice the difference but I'm back to my old self and feeling a lot more active and full of energy, which is amazing.
A worthy mention goes to my current favourite lip balm by Carmex as my lips would feel like paper if it wasn't for that cute little pot in the photos.

- Planning trips
I mentioned in my 2016 year in review post that I am planning a trip to Japan this year, and so far I've been doing pretty well researching hotels and looking at places to visit outside of Tokyo. I think it's essential to have small or big plans to look forward to. A date at the cinema, a night out with friends, a takeaway at home with your pal every friday - little things like this make a massive difference.

- Being more spontaneous
I'm getting tattooed this week. One of my favourite artists has been booked up for over half a year and by surprise she had some free spots and whilst I wasn't planning on getting inked in January here I am, getting ready and excited for my new tattoo. Of course this might be a little too extreme for most but just do it, whatever "it" is for you.

I'd love to know how you beat the blues after the holidays and I hope everyone's year has started off in the best way possible!
